AVs allow proposition reinvention, not just driver automation

“Pizza Hut has unveiled a robot-operated mobile pizza factory in the bed of a modified Toyota Tundra. The prototype will use automated technology to cook pies on-the-go in six to seven minutes, letting the chain expand its delivery area without the pizzas getting cold.”

As Henry Ford may have said: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” The same sentiment is true of the impact of Autonomous Vehicles on last mile delivery – businesses see it as a way to make delivery cheaper, and miss the opportunity to make a better overall consumer proposition. In this wonderful example from Pizza Hut, that means hotter pizzas!

The discussions of AV and drone impact on last mile focuses a lot on faster and cheaper, and not enough on better. What could your business do better if it did it at the customer’s home?
